DIRECTOR’S NOTE
I bought this play in a bookstore on a whim because the title stood out to me. There’s no way a play called The Underpants won’t be fun, right? Steve Martin’s adaptation modernizes Carl Sternheim’s original play and pokes fun at the ideas of societal conformity and sexual repression, both topics as relevant now as they were in 1910. In staging this production, we have had to strike a delicate balance: embracing the ridiculous while still honoring the astute social commentary the lies beneath. While this play is a sharp and funny satire, it is important to acknowledge that it contains elements that portray outdated and harmful societal views. We recognize that some of the humor may feel uncomfortable or offensive. Our production does not endorse these outdated views. Instead, we aim to highlight the absurdity of the social structures that upheld them then and continue to uphold them now. We invite you to laugh with us, but also to reflect on how far we’ve come-and how far we still have to go. Enjoy the chaos.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT
Steve Martin is a celebrated comedian, writer, actor, and musician known for his sharp, absurdist humor. His plays include Picasso at the Lapin Agile, Meteor Shower, and the Tony-nominated musical Bright Star. The Underpants is his adaptation of Carl Sternheim’s 1910 German farce Die Hose.
Carl Sternheim (1878-1942) was a German playwright whose satirical works critiqued the bourgeoisie of his time. Die Hose remains one of his most enduring plays.
CAST BIOS
Brent Whitted (Theo Maske) graduated from Drama Studio London in 2016 and has done primarily film and voiceover work since then including Oleander-the spectral nemesis lurking in Meow Wolf Denver’s Convergence Station. Hankering for a return to stage acting, he was part of the recent ALT cast of Dracula-A Comedy of Terrors (Mina/Van Helsing) and, at the Vortex Theatre, Hamlet Ghost/Player King). Returning to fast-paced farce, Brent is thrilled to be part of this vibrantly talented team at Adobe.
Sarah Kesselring (Louise Maske) has always been fascinated by storytelling, graduating from the University of New Mexico with a B.A. in Creative Writing. Some of her favorite theatrical roles include Bridgit in Death by Design, Yvonne in The Dinner Party, and Mary Bennet in Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley. When not acting, Sarah loves to read books of all genres and play with her two feisty cats. Sarah would like to thank her spouse Lapis for their patience, encouragement, and love. She hopes you enjoy the show and thanks you for supporting local theatre.
Kelly Hughes (Gertrude Deuter) is super excited to be in Steve Martin’s The Underpants! While she has been in several productions in Jacksonville, Florida, this will be her first production in Albuquerque, NM, not to mention performing alongside her husband, Myles. She has played Maid in Dracula, Smitty in Play On!, Shelby in Steel Magnolias, Officer Pudney in Rumors, Susanne in No Sex Please, We’re British and Cookie in Rumors.
Myles Hughes (Frank Versati/King) is thrilled to be returning for his second production at The Adobe Theater, having previously played Agent Frank in Unnec-essary Farce. Other past roles include Bardolph ( The Merry Wives of Windsor), Lenny Ganz (Rumors), Owen Melville (The Melville Boys), Timmy (Hand to God), Christo-pher Wren (The Mousetrap), and Sam/Mr. Burns (Mr. Burns, a Post-Electric Play). He would like to thank Tanner and the whole cast for being so amazing to work with, and is immensely grateful for the chance to once again share the stage with his beloved wife Kelly.
Drew Groves (Klinglehoff/Benjamin Cohen) believes in community. Together, our unique self-expressions and creative collaborations can be a wellspring of possibility, healing, and vitality in a challenging and beautiful world. He is the founding minister of Bosque Center for Spiritual Living and a chaplain with Rio Grande Hospice. In Albuquerque theater for over thirty years, Drew’s favorite recent roles include Mal Beineke (Addams Family, Landmark), Judge Turpin (Sweeney Todd, MTS), and Uncle Peck (How I Learned to Drive, Vortex). Thank you, cast-mates and production team, for this joyful show. Love always to Travis and the kitties.
PRODUCTION TEAM BIOS
Tanner Sroufe (Director and Set/Sound Designer) is excited to be directing his first show at the Adobe and to be working with this wonderful group of folks! Tanner has been seen performing on many Albuquerque stages for the last decade or so. In the last few years he has ventured into directing, beginning with Clue, On Stage in 2022. Tanner would like to thank this immensely talented cast and crew for helping him put this show together.
Kristine Padilla (Stage Manager) is so excited to be a part of The Underpants team! She has been lucky enough to make her community acting debut here at Adobe Theater in the past year. You may have seen her in Death by Design (Alice), The Outsider (Louise), or The Hollow (Midge). And now she is excited to make her tech debut at this little theater that’s become a home! She’d love to thank her friends and family for always pushing her to follow her dreams, her partner and director for being so kind, her awesome ASM, and her sweet puppy, Pepper.
Julian Wheaton (Assistant Stage Manager) is delighted to help bring The Underpants to life! Having made his acting debut last year as Jack in Death by Design , he’s now expanding his skillset backstage as assistant stage manager. He would like to thank all the lovely people involved in the show–especially Tanner and Kristine, for offering him the chance to try something new.
Jason Godin (Costume Designer) is the proud resident costumer at the Adobe. He has been either on stage or costuming since middle school. He would like to take this time to thank the two halves of his heart, Natalia and Sebastian for always inspiring him to do better, be better and allowing him to be the proudest Dad. A big thank you to his family for their constant support and to Mark, for pushing him back into the lights of the stage.
Lapis Kesselring (Light Designer) has been lighting plays in Albuquerque since 2017, and lit concerts touring through Albuquerque before that. Lapis’ most recent design was for Now & Then at the Adobe, and they’re excited to be back at the Adobe for this play! Thanks to Lapis’ beautiful wife, Sarah, for getting them into theatrical lighting in the first place, to Tanner for inviting them to design for this production, and to the Adobe for allowing them to once again tinker with the lights.
Linda Wilson (Props Designer and Scenic Artist) moved to Albuquerque from the East Coast in 1009 and discovered the local theater scene in 2011. Her first show was All My Sons at the Adobe Theater, and since then, she has been involved in over 80 productions. Primarily working behind the scenes as a designer, painter, and props specialist, Linda has also appeared in small roles from time to time.
